Famed NBA shooting guard LeBron James, of the Los Angeles Lakers, opened a state-of-the-art elementary school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
The “I Promise” elementary school facility was built with funds provided by The Lebron James Family Foundation, the press-service of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation said.
Initially, 240 “at-risk” students – that is, students with a significant chance of dropping out of school before finishing – will study there, and each year the number of students will grow.
James, who credits his bicycle as a huge factor in giving him an escape from dangerous parts of his neighborhood and the freedom to explore, is providing each child with a bicycle. The school will focus on catching-up students lagging behind in their curriculum, job placement assistance for parents, and an on-site food bank.
James, who holds four of the NBA’s Most Valuable Player Awards, said that the opening of the school was “one of the greatest moments, if not the greatest, of my life.”
This year, James made headlines when he opted out of his Cleveland Cavaliers contract to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
