NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg acknowledged that the North Atlantic Alliance could have provided Ukraine with more weapons to prevent Russia’s invasion in 2022.

He made this statement in an interview with the German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, as cited by Reuters.

Stoltenberg noted that while NATO countries are now supplying Ukraine with weapons for military actions, at that time, it would have been arms “to prevent the war.” According to him, the Alliance did not arm Ukraine before the full-scale Russian invasion due to fears of escalating tensions with Russia.

Stoltenberg now advocates for a diplomatic resolution to the war, but believes that any dialogue with Russia “must be based on Ukraine’s strength.”

Regarding his future career after stepping down from his position, the Secretary General said he has “many options” and plans to live in Oslo. However, he did not confirm reports about his appointment as the head of the Munich Security Conference.
