Decentralization is an important stage to go through for a country that wishes give more responsibilities to its local administrations – and even more so for post-Soviet countries in which centralization was the way to go for decades.

The Ukrainian Minister of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Community Services, Hennadiy Zubko, praised the upcoming changes, during the 14th annual investor conference in Kyiv.

Hennadiy Zubko went further and explained that “the main change of mentality as a result of decentralization is that we don’t think in terms of localities anymore, but in terms of communities. Soviet times were very different on that regards. Now the state has decided to focus on developing communities, which themselves seek the chance to find investors. And most importantly, Ukraine is trying to adopt the same democratic principles of governance as any other European country.”

He added that “it is important to create the same business environment that you would find in other European nations – that way it will facilitate business growth in Ukraine.”
