Former CIA Director and ex-Secretary of State in the Trump administration, Mike Pompeo, sharply criticized the restrictions imposed by Western allies on Ukraine’s use of long-range Western weapons.
Pompeo made these remarks during a meeting at a think tank in London, as quoted by “Voice of America.”
He rejected the suggestion that Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons would escalate the war, stating that it would not pose additional risks. “The policy of imposed restrictions has become harmful… The inability to strike military targets across an arbitrary line seems to me militarily unwise and strategically foolish,” said the former U.S. Secretary of State.
The Biden administration has agreed that American weapons can be used along the border, allowing Ukrainians to strike positions from which Russians launch attacks on Ukraine. However, Washington opposes strikes on deep Russian territory using U.S. weapons.
During President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the U.S. last week, there were no public announcements regarding permission for Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to strike deep into Russian territory.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated at the end of September that a decision to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western long-range weapons against military targets in Russia could be made before winter.
