Amid speculation about the future of the halted Nord Stream 2 project, Germany’s Green Party is demanding a swift and clear statement from Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz.
As ntv reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently claimed that Moscow and Washington have been discussing the Nord Stream pipelines.
“If Lavrov is now talking about the U.S. and Russia negotiating the commissioning of Nord Stream 2, the future chancellor must make it unmistakably clear that this is not in the interest of Germany or Europe,” said Green Party leader Franziska Brantner.
Referring to the defense and infrastructure package passed last week, she added, “We, the Greens, did not vote for billions to be spent on strengthening our defense only for the next federal government to refill Russia’s war chest with gas money.”
German media previously reported that Putin’s German associate, Matthias Warnig—who has ties to the Stasi secret police—has been lobbying in the U.S. for the revival of Nord Stream 2.
Commenting on these reports, the European Commission stated that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project is not of common interest to European Union member states.
