A Litmus Test for the Country: Iraq’s 2018 Parliamentary Elections

The main task of the security forces is to secure the safety of voters during the general elections, so they were given the opportunity to cast their ballots ahead of time. This includes police, military, and even the militia of the Kurdistan Regional Government. The country is still recovering from the brutal war against the Islamic State and shadow of the devastation left behind by the conflict with ISIS, which only concluded in December. Terror attacks by ISIS and other groups are expected during the elections. Whoever wins the election will face the difficult task of reconciling the ruling Shi’a Arab majority with the restive Sunni Arab and Kurdish minorities.

These parliamentary elections are already considered to be the embodiment of continuity and changes in a time of the particularly divisive atmosphere for the country. In the coming elections, the Shia vote will be split among five coalitions.
