Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys believes that NATO should be more decisive in countering Russian sabotage attacks. He said this in an interview with Spiegel.

According to him, if earlier it was a question of hybrid attacks by the Russian Federation, “now we are dealing with sabotage operations, with real attacks.”

Budris emphasized that these attacks were “planned and carried out by the military intelligence” of the Russian Federation.

“And if the military is responsible for this, we must also change the way we respond to these attacks. As members of the Alliance, we must respond more decisively if we want to prevent Russia’s next escalation steps,”The Foreign Minister emphasized

According to the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, NATO’s response to Russian subversive attacks does not have to be symmetrical.
The response could also be to “provide Ukraine with more support by supplying it with certain weapons systems,”

“For me, the key question is: who plans such attacks? And who carries them out? We cannot ignore it if it is part of the Russian army,” Budris summarized.

As you know, a NATO mission has recently been launched in response to the December 25th discovery of damage to submarine cables between Estonia and Finland in order to prevent possible attempts to damage underwater infrastructure and strengthen regional security. The NATO operation will last 90 days.

In turn, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that if the current phase of the war ends without reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, a new Russian attack will be much more dangerous and will threaten all countries that were once part of the Soviet “sphere of influence.”
