On Thursday, February 8, Latvian Saeima approved an analogue of the Magnitsky Act, which prohibits entrance to the country of foreigners involved in large-scale corruption, money laundering and human rights violations, according to the Lithuanian portal Delfi.

“The decision to support this act is a matter of honour for Latvia as a democratic and law-governed state, as well as a matter of conscience for every MP of the Saeima,” said the Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs Ojars Eric Kalnins.

Saeima condemns Russia for insufficient investigation of the circumstances of Sergei Magnitsky’s death and also emphasizes that Latvia consistently opposes violations of human rights, financial fraud and corruption.

The day before this act was approved by the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Affairs of the country. 49 individuals are mentioned in the act.

Previously, similar sanctions on the so-called Magnitsky Act were introduced by such countries as the United States, Canada, Lithuania, Estonia, and the United Kingdom.

Note that lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was arrested on charges of non-payment of taxes, while he claimed that there was a large-scale theft in Russia, sanctioned and carried out by Russian officials. He died in custody, having spent 358 days there. It is believed that he wasn’t provided with appropriate medical assistance.
