Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has said that Ukraine may start a revenge war against Russia in the future if it does not become a NATO member. He said this in an interview with the Kyiv Independent.
Kuleba emphasized that if Russia and Ukraine leave the talks unsatisfied, it will lead to revanchist sentiments on both sides.
“It may seem counterintuitive, but the only way to keep Ukraine from war with Russia in the future is to make it a NATO member. This will bind the country with legal obligations and eliminate the risk of allies being drawn into a war with Russia,” he explained.
According to Kuleba, the next generation of Ukrainian politicians will focus on rebuilding the country, but the next generation may come to power under slogans of revenge.
“Returning the territories, making Russia pay…. When we get off our knees economically, these arguments will become key in Ukrainian politics,” the former minister said.
At the same time, he admitted that in the short term it is possible to achieve a truce without Ukraine joining NATO. However, in his opinion, the truce will not mean the end of the war.
Kuleba also added that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin would dare to attack NATO only if Ukraine is defeated, as otherwise the united forces of the alliance would remain invincible for Russia.
