May 18, is the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Crimean Tatar Genocide. On this day in 1944, by the decree of Joseph Stalin, the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars from the Crimea to Central Asia and the Ural Mountains began. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on the international community to recognize it as genocide of the Crimean Tatar people.
The Minister said this at a briefing, UATV informs.
“Today I want to appeal to the international community to condemn this crime and to recognize the deportation as a genocide of the Crimean Tatar people”, – Kuleba said.
According to the minister, Russia continues to suppress the Crimean Tatar people – it stops the activities of the Mejlis, ousts independent media from the occupied Crimea, persecutes people on religious grounds, deprives Crimean Tatars of property and language rights, and fabricates criminal charges against them.
“But we will not give up and won’t stop until these crimes are stopped, until Russia leaves Crimea, and all opportunities for free development and prosperity of the Crimean peninsula and the Crimean Tatar people are created there after the return of the Ukrainian government. In particular, the work of the Crimean Platform will be devoted to this issue”, – said the Foreign Minister.
Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Concept for the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language.
Besides, the human rights activists recorded almost 150 detentions in the occupied Crimea since the beginning of the year.
