Before the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas emphasized that any peace agreement concluded without the participation of Ukraine and European countries would have no chance of success.
Europe and Ukraine must be involved in the negotiations
Kallas emphasized that without the participation of Ukraine and Europe, any agreements will simply not be implemented. She reminded that attempts to “negotiate” without the main parties to the conflict have always failed.
“Without us at the negotiating table, anything can be agreed upon, but it will not matter. Without Ukraine and Europe, such an agreement will be dead,” she said.
A quick peace deal will be “dirty” and ineffective
The Estonian prime minister emphasized that a hasty conclusion of the agreement at any cost could only worsen the situation.
“Any quick decision will be bad. It will be an unfair deal, which we have already seen in Minsk. It didn’t work then, it won’t work now. It will not stop the war and the killings,” Kallas explained.
Historical parallels: “We are living in 1938”
Callas compared the current situation to the events before World War II.
“We are in a situation similar to 1938, when Czechoslovakia decided to fight back against the aggressor. The only thing that was required of others then was to support it. The world hesitated then, and this led to a catastrophe. Now we must help Ukraine to avoid an even bigger conflict,” she said.
Position of the European Union
The head of the Estonian government stressed that the EU should continue to help Ukraine in the war against Russia by providing the necessary weapons and resources for defense.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Kyiv and Moscow should make concessions to end the war. He argued that funding for Ukraine had led to a “stalemate” and called Kyiv’s possible victory over Russia unrealistic.
However, Kallas’s words demonstrate the clear position of Estonia and Ukraine’s European partners: there can be no agreement without Ukraine.
