Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership is the most effective security guarantee for the country.
Meloni made this statement following a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Rome on February 26.
She mentioned that, among other topics, she discussed with her Swedish counterpart the efforts to “lay the foundation for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”
“This goal can only be achieved by providing Kyiv with adequate security guarantees to ensure that what we have witnessed over the past three years does not happen again, and that European countries facing the greatest threats can instead feel secure,” said the Italian Prime Minister.
She emphasized that such guarantees “must be implemented within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance.”
“Therefore, I believe that this is the best structure to guarantee peace that is neither fragile nor temporary and that prevents the risk of Europe once again descending into the tragedy of war,” Meloni stated.
According to her, other security guarantee solutions “seem more complicated to me and, frankly, less effective.”
The Italian Prime Minister, who has developed good relations with Donald Trump, has recently been reserved in commenting on his administration’s efforts to “end the war” between Russia and Ukraine.
