Italian Foreign Minister, British Foreign Secretary visit Kyiv amid warnings of Russian invasion

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio and British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will come with official visits to Ukraine this week. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reported this.

Luigi di Maio arrives in Kyiv on February 15, while Truss visit is scheduled for February 17-18.

“NATO cannot give up on the open-door policy and the commitments made at the 2008 Bucharest Summit for Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance in the future, but we know that this is a red line for Moscow. On the other hand, Kyiv has not completed the reforms that it had to implement to achieve NATO membership,” said Luigi di Maio before going to Kyiv.

Italy does not recognize the annexation of Crimea and is in favor of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, said Di Maio as he and Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini addressed a joint session of the Foreign and Defense Committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate on the crisis between Russia and Ukraine.

February 14, British foreign minister Liz Truss said following a meeting of the government’s crisis response committee that Russia could invade Ukraine at any moment. Boris Johnson says there is “still time” for Russia to “step back” from the situation with Ukraine, urging all sides to carry on talking. Tension is continuing to grow on the border between the countries, where Russia has more than 100,000 troops.

The US has warned of the “very distinct possibility” of a Russian invasion of Ukraine in the next few days, potentially involving an overwhelming attack on Kyiv, and told all remaining Americans to leave the country in the next 48 hours. New US intelligence suggests Russia could intend to attack Ukraine before the end of the Olympics (February 20).
