Iran and Russia intend to cement their relations by signing a new strategic partnership, media reported. The agreement is planned to be concluded before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, which will take place on January 20. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bahaei said the final signing is expected “at the end of January.”
The new agreement will replace a 20-year strategic pact signed in 2001 and extended in 2020. It covers areas such as energy, manufacturing, transportation and agriculture, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency.
A high-level Russian delegation led by Deputy Prime Ministers Alexei Overchuk and Vitaly Savelyev has arrived in Tehran for the talks. They will meet with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian to agree on the text of the treaty, which will symbolize the rapprochement of the two countries amid their growing global isolation.
Earlier, in early 2022, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it had finalized a “major intergovernmental agreement” with Iran, but its details were not disclosed at the time. The new partnership confirms the strengthening of the alliance against the backdrop of common geopolitical challenges.
