Russia uses troops in the Kursk region whose personnel are not fighting for their intended purpose, which may reduce the ability of the Russian Federation to return territories occupied by Ukrainian forces, British intelligence reports.

The British Ministry of Defense cites a report from the Russian publication “Vazhnie istorii”, according to which one of the units participating in the defense against the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region is a specialized motorized rifle regiment formed from servicemen of the Air and Space Forces, which is unusual a phenomenon

This motorized rifle regiment was formed in May 2024 and is subordinate to the Northern Group of Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It included individuals who previously performed specialized functions: operators of early warning radars and operators of long-range heavy bomber regiments.

The diversion of personnel from these previously priority areas probably indicates a permanent shortage of personnel in the Russian Federation, according to the British Ministry of Defense. By using them in an infantry role, they are also being misused, which could reduce Russia’s ability to regain territory in Kursk region.

Russia continues to create new units and recruit more personnel to support massive attrition against Ukraine.

The high casualty rate means that Russia needs constant replenishment of infantry personnel on the front lines, which will almost certainly continue to limit Russia’s ability to create units with a higher level of combat capability.

Meanwhile, Pentagon intelligence estimates indicate that Ukraine and Russia do not possess sufficient military resources to mount major offensive operations, which may indicate that the two sides are heading for a stalemate.

Earlier, the USA recorded the redeployment of a certain part of Russian forces to the territory of the Kursk region.
