Every week, one child became a victim of a conflict in eastern Ukraine from January to November last year, according to the UNICEF report released late in December. The main causes of child injuries are explosive remnants of war (ERW), Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), which accounted for two thirds of deaths and injuries of children during this time.
Three children, 14, 9 and 3 years old, suffered significant injuries from UXO, two of them lost their fingers.
The organization calls for more efforts to protect children from the risks associated with mines and UXO. Most children were injured after they picked up explosive devices.
