Nationally, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris leads Republican Donald Trump by five percentage points — 47 percent to 42 percent — less than two months before the presidential election, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Harris widened her national approval rating lead over Trump after a presidential debate in which most pollsters said she won.

In a preliminary Reuters/Ipsos poll, the Democratic vice president led her opponent by four points.

Among voters who said they had heard at least something about the presidential debate, 53 percent said Harris won, compared to 24 percent that Trump won.

Also, some 52% of Reuters/Ipsos respondents said Trump stuttered and did not look convincing at the debate, while only 21% said the same about Harris.

National polls give important signals about the views of the US electorate, but the winner of the election is determined by the voting results in each state, Reuters reminds.
