Federal German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has announced the dissolution of parliament, paving the way for early elections.
In a speech Friday, Steinmeier said the 20th Bundestag has been dissolved and new elections are scheduled for Feb. 23. The date was agreed between the leaders of the Social Democratic Party and the opposition Christian Democratic Union.
Explaining his decision, Steinmeier said the country needed “an effective government and a reliable majority” in difficult times.
“I am convinced that new elections are the right way forward for our country,” he emphasized.
The president’s decision followed a request by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who initiated the dissolution of parliament after the failure of a confidence vote in his government.
