Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the far-left German party “Sarah Wagenknecht’s Alliance,” has once again spoken out against military aid to Ukraine. In an interview with the Funke Media Group and Tagesschau, she called for an immediate cessation of arms supplies if Russia agrees to a ceasefire on the current front line and starts peace talks.
Wagenknecht said that the arms supplies did not help improve Ukraine’s position and called the German government’s intention to provide additional military aid in the amount of 3 billion euros irresponsible.
The politician also opposed sending German soldiers to Ukraine and suggested that security guarantees should be provided by neutral states such as Brazil, China, India, and Turkey.
Last week, Spiegel magazine reported that Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had pushed for more military aid for Ukraine, but that Chancellor Olaf Scholz had allegedly put a stop to the initiative. However, Pistorius denied these reports, noting that no final decision had been made.
Wagenknecht’s remarks once again sparked a heated debate over Germany’s role in supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia.
