The German government has reacted to a column by American billionaire Elon Musk in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, where he expressed support for the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD).
According to Reuters, a government spokesperson stated on Monday that Musk is attempting to influence Germany’s federal elections, scheduled for February 23.
“It is indeed the case that Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal elections,” the spokesperson said, referring to his posts on X (Twitter) and the article supporting AfD.
At the same time, the spokesperson acknowledged Musk’s right to express his opinion, stating, “Ultimately, freedom of speech extends even to the greatest nonsense.”
The publication of Musk’s column prompted Welt am Sonntag opinion editor Eva Marie Kogel to resign in protest.
Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz, leader of the German opposition CDU/CSU bloc, criticized Musk’s call to support AfD in the upcoming elections as “intrusive and arbitrary.”
Previously, Musk had written on X (Twitter) that “only AfD can save Germany.”
