German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warns against ending support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
The German minister’s statement was reported by Zeit.
According to Pistorius, Ukraine must be in a position of strength and possibly “have the opportunity to negotiate at some point.”
“If we stop supporting Ukraine tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow, it will be the end of Ukraine—the end of a sovereign, free state in the center of Europe,” he said.
The head of the German Defense Ministry also responded to calls to withdraw support, arguing that this is not Germany’s war.
“Indeed, this is not our war, but it could become ours. Anyone who listens to Russian President Vladimir Putin can come to only one conclusion: ‘Putin is preparing,'” Pistorius warned.
He emphasized that the Kremlin leader is “creating the conditions to seriously threaten us,” citing as examples the shift to a wartime economy, increased tank production, and a growing number of soldiers.
Earlier, Pistorius stated that he still sees a likelihood that Russia could attempt to attack NATO countries in 2029-2030.
Meanwhile, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár stated that if U.S. President Donald Trump stops supporting Ukraine, the EU should not bear the full burden of assisting the country.
