French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed hope that elected U.S. President Donald Trump would not abandon support for Ukraine despite his previous statements.
He made this remark in an interview with Le Parisien.
According to the French Foreign Minister, Trump is “too wise” to agree to what would be the largest territorial annexation in the past 75 years.
“He is too wise to forget that no just and lasting peace can be made behind the backs of Ukrainians and over the heads of Europeans. It would cement the right of the strongest, with very serious consequences in Europe and other regions of the world,” he added.
It’s worth recalling that during his campaign, Trump stated that he would find a solution to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours,” but he did not explain how he would achieve this.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s inner circle has reportedly discussed the idea of freezing the front lines at the current demilitarized zone and imposing a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine’s NATO membership as part of his promise to “quickly end the war.”
Against this backdrop, EU leaders met in Budapest to discuss the possibility of continuing military support for Ukraine in the event that Donald Trump decides to halt U.S. assistance.
