On March 20, former President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, was taken into police custody, Radio Liberty reported with reference to Reuters.

He was questioned over the financing of his 2007 election campaign. It is alleged that he received millions of euros in illegal financing from the regime of the late Libyan leader, Moammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy was questioned by officers at Nanterre police station, west of Paris, as a part of a five-year investigation into the allegations. In April 2013, the police launched an investigation into the alleged misuse of power, forgery, abuse of public money, and money laundering.

Sarkozy served as the president of France from 2007 and 2012. He has continued to deny the allegations of receiving illegal money from Libya.

The allegations against Sarkozy were made by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the late Gaddafi, in 2011, that Mr Sarkozy had accepted millions of euros from him and his father to finance his successful 2007 election campaign.
