For ceasefire to work there must be deterrence – Kallas

For a ceasefire on the battlefield between Ukraine and Russia to be effective, there must be a deterrent factor.

This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in an interview with Euronews, Ukrinform reports.

“In order for the ceasefire to work there has to be deterrence. And if all guards are down, I mean Putin has shown this before, he’s not keeping to the ceasefires,” she said.

Kallas also cast doubt over Putin’s good will and the feasibility of the limited, 30-day ceasefire he agreed with Trump.

She also emphasized that the stronger the European Union is, the lower the likelihood of war.

“We need to do more for our defense. We also need to do more for Ukraine so that the stronger they are on the battlefield, the stronger they are on the negotiation table,” she stated.

As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed to have had a productive phone conversation with Russian leader Putin, during which they allegedly reached an agreement on an immediate ceasefire targeting energy and infrastructure facilities.
