Finland has not found sufficient evidence to link Russia to the damage of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea in late December 2024, allegedly involving the tanker Eagle S.

According to the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the investigation conducted by Finland’s Central Criminal Police has so far found no proof of Russian involvement in the damage to undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland. The report cites five sources.

Finland’s Security Intelligence Service has also not uncovered any evidence of deliberate actions. Based on intelligence and findings from the preliminary investigation, and in the absence of evidence of intent, the damage to the undersea cables is considered likely an accident, the newspaper states.

Nonetheless, Finnish authorities are still conducting a preliminary investigation into the suspected damage to an electric cable between Finland and Estonia and four telecommunications cables allegedly caused by the tanker Eagle S.

Following the incidents, Finland detained the ship, which media reports say had previously been found with equipment capable of spying on NATO planes and ships.

The Eagle S remains under arrest as part of the criminal investigation led by Finland’s Central Criminal Police. The number of crew members under suspicion has risen to eight.
