Female troops will take part for the first time in this year’s annual Independence Day parade in Kyiv.

“Let’s celebrate the 27th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence together!” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.

Currently, there are almost 24,000 women serving in the armed forces, and at least 55,600 working in other military departments. Women make up 8 percent of the armed forces. Between 2014-2017, 6,000 women have served on the front line.

The Independence Day parade will take place on August 24 and will feature troops from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, National Guard, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Security Service, State Emergency Service, State Border Guard Service, 20 orchestras and over 200 pieces of military equipment will be presented.
