FC Shakhtar celebrates its anniversary (PHOTO)

On May 24, FC Shakhtar celebrates its 85th anniversary.

The football club began its history on May 24, 1936, making its debut in the USSR championship: the match took place in Kazan, the rival was the local Dynamo.

For 85 years of history, 33 head coaches have worked with Shakhtar. Oleh Oshenkov (9 years old) was the record holder for the duration as a mentor during the Soviet times. Under his guidance, the Shakhtar gained the glory of a cup fighter and won their first trophies – the 1961 and 1962 Union Cups. And the most titled in the Soviet period was Viktor Nosov, who led the team from 1979 to 1985 – 2 Cups and 1 Super Cup.

In independent Ukraine, the record holder among head coaches is Mircea Lucescu, who has worked at Shakhtar for 12 years. The Orange-and-Blacks played 573 matches with him and won 22 trophies: the UEFA Cup, 8 championships, 6 Cups and 7 Ukrainian Super Cup. Paulo Fonseca is the second in the number of titles, replacing him: the Portuguese mentor in 3 seasons led the team to 7 triumphs in home tournaments.

To date, Shakhtar has played 3 012 official matches, winning 1 518 victories, drawing 686 times and losing 808 times. In total, the Shakhtar scored 4 953 goals and lost 3 208 times. In its history, the team has already won 40 trophies.
