According to Spiegel, Europe’s military capabilities in a potential confrontation with Russia remain a topic of concern despite numerical advantages in some areas. A report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) highlights key statistics comparing European NATO member states with Russia:
- Active personnel: Russia has 1.1 million soldiers, while European NATO member states collectively have over two million.
- Battle tanks: NATO holds a fleet of more than 6,700 tanks compared to Russia’s 2,900.
- Fighter jets: NATO possesses 2,300 fighters, while Russia has 1,400.
- Artillery: NATO’s European countries command over 15,400 guns, against Russia’s 6,090.
However, the situation becomes more uncertain if Türkiye, due to its close ties with Moscow, withholds NATO military assistance. Türkiye contributes a significant portion of NATO’s military assets, including:
• Nearly 25% of NATO’s soldiers,
• Over a third of its battle tanks,
• About 18% of its artillery.
Without Türkiye’s full participation, Europe’s resources in a military scenario would be notably weakened.
