The European Union is moving to speed up preparations for a 21st sanctions package against Russia, with member states calling for stronger and faster action, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said, UATV English reports.

Speaking ahead of the second day of an informal EU summit in Cyprus, Kallas highlighted recent progress, including the approval of the €90 billion support package for Ukraine and the adoption of the 20th sanctions package.

“Good news for Ukraine: we have resolved the issue of the €90 billion loan and adopted the 20th sanctions package. Now, of course, we also need to revisit previous ‘red lines’ that blocked certain measures and consider what more can be done,” she stated.

According to Kallas, EU leaders are firmly pushing forward work on the next round of sanctions, signaling continued pressure on Moscow.

“This sends a clear message to Russia that they will not outlast us, and it is also a clear message that Ukraine matters more to us — and that we will continue supporting it,” she emphasized.

The push for a new sanctions package comes as the EU looks to tighten restrictions and close remaining loopholes, following earlier measures targeting Russia’s energy sector, financial system, and military-industrial complex.

In a joint statement, António Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the recent decisions and called on international partners to help address Ukraine’s remaining financing needs.
