The European Union plans to impose sanctions against the Russian “shadow fleet” after incidents with damage to underwater cables in the Baltic Sea.
This is stated in a joint statement of the European Commission and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The statement condemned any deliberate action aimed at destroying Europe’s critical infrastructure.
“The suspected vessel is part of the Russian shadow fleet, which threatens security, the environment and at the same time finances Russia’s military budget. We will propose additional measures, including sanctions, against this fleet,” the document reads.
In response to the incidents, the EU intends to strengthen the protection of undersea cables. This includes improving information exchange, introducing new detection technologies, increasing underwater repair capabilities and strengthening international cooperation.
