Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that the United Nations is no longer an effective tool for global governance and needs urgent reform.

The statement was reported by Ukrinform.

According to Erdogan, this reform must happen quickly.

“One of the most significant outcomes of World War II, in which millions lost their lives, was the establishment of the United Nations system—the broadest platform where all countries, large and small, could unite. So, can we continue to work with the UN in its current state? No. The UN must be fully reformed,” Erdogan said.

He also emphasized that the fate of nations “cannot remain in the hands of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.”

Previously, Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggested that UN Security Council reform should include expanding its membership, abolishing veto rights for any state, and excluding any member involved in “illegal wars,” such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has also expressed the need for Security Council reform in light of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
