Environmental Group Trying to Stop Nord Stream 2

German environmental protection organization, Natuschutzbund Deutschland is trying to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Polish Radio reported.

The pipeline, if built, would supply around 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Germany via the Baltic states. The pipe would circumvent Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltic stats. The governments of each of these nations along with the US oppose the pipe’s construction, fearing it would increase Moscow’s influence in Europe.

Naturschutzbund Deutschland opposes the pipe as well, saying it would do irreversible damage to the marine environment.

The environmental group appealed to a court in Greifswald, northeastern Germany, to, at least temporarily, halt the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from being built.

Earlier this year the organisation challenged a German construction permit allowing a Russian-German consortium to build the pipeline.
