Today, polling stations opened in early presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey.

Approximately 56 million people are eligible to vote in presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, six presidential candidates, including the current head of state Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his main opponent Muharrem İnce, the opposition Republican People’s Party candidate, are running for the presidency.

Eight political parties, including the ruling Justice and Development Party, are competing for seats in the Turkish Parliament.

Erdoğan and his Islamist party came to power more than a decade and a half ago.

In case of an election victory, İnce, the opposition leader, promises to cancel the state of emergency in Turkey within 48 hours, declare a resolute fight against terrorism and accelerate negotiations with the European Union on accession.

Erdoğan announced early elections after Turkish citizens supported strengthening presidential powers in a referendum.

In Istanbul on Saturday, millions of people came to a rally in support of  İnce.
