The Donbass Reintegration Law, published earlier in the Verkhovna Rada’s newspaper, Holos Ukrainiy, has officially come into effect today, Feb.24.

The law is called “On Peculiarities of the State Policy on Ensuring the State Sovereignty of Ukraine in the Temporarily Occupied Territories in Donetsk and Luhansk Regions.”

The new law aims at restoring Ukrainian control over Donbass. It qualifies Russia as an aggressor state and gives Ukraine the right to self-defense. Certain territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions are recognized as occupied. Also, the law expands the capabilities of the armed forces of Ukraine.

The Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories is officially recognized as illegal.

Only two types of documents issued in the occupied territories will be recognized by Ukraine: birth and death certificates. Citizens of Ukraine will retain ownership of their properties on the occupied territories.
