Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis have discussed a new package of EU sanctions aimed at deterring Russian aggression against Ukraine, the NSDC’s press service has said, Ukrinform reports.

Danilov met with Dombrovskis during the latter’s visit to Kyiv, the statement said.

Both parties discussed the current security situation in the region in view of the escalation of Russia’s hybrid aggression against Ukraine. They also drew attention to cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union.

Danilov thanked the EU countries for their assistance to Ukraine, including for the launch of an emergency macro-financial assistance program worth EUR 1.2 billion, EUR 120 million in grant aid and a new investment package of more than EUR 6 billion as part of cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries.

Danilov noted the speed at which the new emergency aid package was provided.

“The economic stability of our state in these difficult times is extremely important. Thank you for understanding this,” he said.

Both parties paid special attention to the introduction of a new package of EU sanctions to deter Russian aggression.

For his part, Dombrovskis assured Danilov of continued EU support for Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to him, the support of the European Union is important for overcoming the security challenges facing Ukraine, as well as for improving the investment climate and continuing the process of Ukraine’s economic integration into the EU.

Dombrovskis said the EU would continue to support Ukraine.
