The US acknowledges China’s big role in peace talks but admits it’s not likely China can facilitate peace in Ukraine while being the main provider for the Russian defense industry.
This was stated by the US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller during a briefing on June 3.
“We have always been clear that China could play a useful diplomatic role in helping resolve this conflict if it wanted to. But that said, right now it’s hard to see how they could play that role given the actions that we’ve seen China take over recent months to rebuild, reconstitute Russia’s defence industrial base,” Miller explained.
Miller’s statement comes as a response to China rejecting the invitation to the Peace Summit in Switzerland due to Russia’s absence. Meanwhile, the US will be represented but not by President Biden. Vice President Harris will attend the summit instead.
“We support the peace summit. We want it to be successful, and that’s why you see the Vice President of the United States attending that summit. We support Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts,” Miller added.
Previously, China denied the accusations made by Volodymyr Zelenskyy who stated the state helped Russia to derail the Summit. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry, China has never “fanned fire or fueled the flames” of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
