China has the ability to influence Russia. For lack of alternatives in trade markets, the Russian Federation has become directly dependent on China. Political scientist Igor Reiterovich spoke about this on the FREEDOM TV channel.
“China has colossal leverage over the Russian Federation. Beijing can simply stop buying gas at any moment. China can simply stop supplying general goods to the Russian market. This would be a disaster for the Russian Federation, because it has no alternative,” he explained.
China is using the situation in which the Russian Federation has found itself to its advantage, the expert emphasized.
“China is taking advantage of the situation in which the Russian Federation has found itself, when it is forced to make any concessions in favor of the People’s Republic of China without any alternative. If China decides to make any public statements regarding the end of the war, it has an instrument of influence on the Russian Federation. Russia will not be able to simply ignore this fact,” he said.
Beijing is only interested in its own interests. By demonstrating the benefits of ending the Russian war against Ukraine, Kyiv will be able to convince China of the need to put pressure on Russia.
“China will not think about Ukraine’s interests and will not think about Russia’s interests. It will think about its own interests first and foremost. And so Ukraine has an opportunity to convey its vision and show that it largely meets China’s geopolitical interests,” the political scientist concluded.
