Canada Pledges $4.5 Million to Train Ukrainian Armed Forces

Yesterday on March 16, 2018, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland issued a statement concerning the Canadian assistance to Ukraine.

On March 16th, the fourth anniversary of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland issued a strong statement in support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The Minister also announced over 4.5 million US dollars in funding to train the Ukrainian Military. The Minister reiterated Canada’s stance on Ukraine with a closing statement that read quote, “Canada is unreserved in its support for the people of Ukraine. We will continue to maintain pressure, including through economic sanctions, until Russia meets its obligations under international law and respects Ukraine’s sovereignty.”

“Canada will continue to work closely with Crimean Tatar organizations to find concrete ways to raise awareness about the situation in Crimea and to promote and protect their human rights. Canada will continue to denounce the banning of the Mejlis, the self-governing body of an Indigenous people, and to call on Russia to reverse this illegal and immoral decision” stated on the Canadian Government official website.
