Canada offering $400 million loan to Ukraine, lethal weapons

Canada will offer a loan of up to $393 million to support Ukraine and USD 6,1 mln worth of lethal equipment and ammunition, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on February 14, Reuters reported.

“The goal of this support from Canada and our other partners is to dissuade Russia from pursuing its aggression towards Ukraine,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude for Canada’s aid.

In late January, Canada promised to provide a $ 120 million loan to the Ukrainian government to support Ukraine’s economic stability. In addition, on February 5, Canada sent a military transport plane to Ukraine. It consisted of personal protective equipment, means of transportation of goods, means of surveillance, and reconnaissance equipment. However, in February it was forced to withdraw its special forces, as Ukraine was bracing for a possible Russian invasion.

Since January 2014, Canada has committed more than $890 million in multi-faceted support to Ukraine, using a range of instruments. These instruments include:

  • development, humanitarian and financial assistance
  • Peace and Stabilization Operations Program
  • the Canadian Police Arrangement

In addition, Canada has been one of Ukraine’s leading bilateral development assistance partners, having committed more than $250 million in development assistance since January 2014.

The U.S., Britain, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania recently rushed anti-armor missiles and other American-made weapons to Ukraine.
