Canada acts as Ukraine’s advocate for NATO membership – Chernev

With regard to the prospects for Ukraine’s membership in NATO, the position of some countries of the Alliance is becoming active. It is important that the process of Ukraine’s membership in NATO is underway. This was announced today, on May 31, on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel by Yegor Chernev, Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

“Today we saw the Czech Parliament adopt a resolution on the full support of Ukraine in NATO, that they are calling for Ukraine to become a member of NATO as soon as possible. And before that, there was a similar statement by the Estonian Parliament, for example, which calls for an invitation to us at the Vilnius summit. That is, the positions of some countries are becoming even more active, publicly active, which is very important, even at the level of state legislative bodies,” he said.

According to Chernev, non-public positions of countries that are not yet ready to publicly support Ukraine are also changing.

“We were recently in Germany, which, until February 24 last year, let’s say, did not really want to talk about Ukraine’s membership in NATO and was skeptical about it. Now the coalition authorities are rather restrained, but they talk about the prospects for Ukraine’s membership. And the opposition generally supports and says that since childhood we have been for Ukraine in NATO. While it must be emphasized that the opposition now is the CDU / CSU, which are the mother party for Merkel, who in 2008 did not let, let’s say, not only she alone, but she was one of those who were against granting MAP to Ukraine then. Now they sprinkle ashes on their heads and say that it was the wrong decision and that mistakes need to be corrected. And we must do everything to ensure that Ukraine becomes a member of NATO. This is in Germany,” said the head of the permanent delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA.

The same applies to Canada.

“We recently talked with Canada, which is ready to act and acts as our lawyer, not only takes a fairly clear position on Ukraine in NATO, but also advocates for our interests in other countries. There is development, the process is underway. Yes, not as fast as we would like, ”Chernev specified.

In his opinion, there will be more specifics at the NATO summit.

“As far as I know, the final document has not yet been prepared. Still our partners are working on it. As I was told, most likely, the main part will be prepared about three weeks before the summit in July. But at the same time, we also did a lot on our part. And you have probably seen the declaration of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which is also quite a weighty, strong document that calls clearly at the Vilnius summit to give a clear not even a road map, but concrete steps that should be taken by Ukraine and NATO towards each other in order for Ukraine to become a member NATO. That is, the process is underway. This is important, ”concluded Yegor Chernev.
