The UK Ministry of Defence’s intelligence community has indicated that North Korean troops engaged in combat against Ukraine would face compatibility issues with Russian forces and challenges operating equipment.

The British Ministry of Defence references earlier reports suggesting that around 10,000 North Korean soldiers are already in Russia, with some “almost certainly” stationed in the Kursk region.

“Russian and Korean forces will almost certainly encounter interoperability difficulties if they have not previously conducted joint military exercises,” the report states.

Additionally, North Korean troops will “almost certainly” struggle with operating Russian equipment, integrating into the Russian command and control structure, and overcoming language barriers with Russian forces.

Estonian intelligence also noted that the involvement of North Korean units on the Ukrainian front is unlikely to significantly impact the situation and that they are likely to suffer heavy losses.

Previously, the U.S. reported that about 8,000 North Korean soldiers are already in Kursk and may soon join active combat.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner believes that the U.S. and NATO allies should consider the option of “directly targeting North Korean troops” if they are present in Ukraine and actively fighting alongside Russia.
