Britain is looking for a “proportionate way” to respond to the threat posed by Russia, said James Slack, the spokesman for the British Prime Minister, Theresa May.

“We need to respond in a proportionate way to this aggressive behavior from Russia and that’s what we’re doing,” Slack said.

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, warned that relations with the West are worse now than during the Cold War.

Evgeny Buzhinsky, a retired lietenant general in Russia was quoted in British newspapers as saying that the fallout of the current diplomatic crisis between Russia and the West could trigger ” the last war in the history of mankind.”

On March 26, more than 20 countries announced the expulsion of Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of former Russian spy, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter in Britain. Russia has warned that it would not accept any international scientific findings on the nerve agent used to poison the Skripals unless its scientists were involved in testing the samples.

May is visiting Denmark and Sweden next week to discuss the international security threat from Russia.
