Borscht in Zero G: NASA Astronaut Reveals Enjoying Ukrainian Food in Space

What does Borsht taste like in space? Dozens of visitors of America House in Kyiv had the opportunity to find out for themselves during a meeting with Randy Breznik, a NASA astronaut.

Randy, or as his colleagues call him “Komrade” Breznik, is in Ukraine this week. Commander Breznik is known for holding up the Ukrainian flag aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 53. He has also enjoyed eating borscht in space and hopes to sing a Ukrainian song next time.

People know what they stood in line for. The American astronaut has a lot to share. Breznik has left Earth twice already and has spent 18 hours in open space. On October 17th, the whole world watched him play with a fidget spinner in zero-gravity and even eat pizza with his colleagues.

During his missions, Breznik became a celebrity. Breznik is loved in Ukraine not only for his stories and videos about space. On October 17th of last year, while being on a mission, the astronaut deployed the Ukrainian flag as well as the American. This was Breznik’s way of expressing his gratitude to Ukraine. A couple of months before his last space mission, the astronaut and his family adopted a boy from the Dnipro city.

Now Breznik is back in Ukraine with another mission – to inspire Ukrainian youth to become interested in space and get involved in creating a whole new world.  Breznik says that “The future is just around the corner. Soon humans will be able to spend up to 18 years beyond Earth. The US astronaut believes that new generations of Ukrainians can become a vital part of the process. The astronaut says Ukrainian students are more than welcome to join new NASA programs. Breznik himself is getting ready for another space challenge. Breznik already visited the Dnipro city and now he is in Kyiv. After that, he will go to Zhytomyr region to donate the Ukrainian flag he deployed in space to the Museum of Astronautics.
