U.S. President Joe Biden admitted that his decision to withdraw from the 2024 election was a mistake, believing he could have beaten Donald Trump.

This was reported by The Washington Post.

Biden and some of his assistants still believe that he should have stayed in the presidential race despite a poor performance at the debates and low polling results, which led Democrats to pressure him to withdraw from the race. The president and the aforementioned assistants have recently told people that he could have beaten Trump, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to The Washington Post, in private conversations with close associates, Biden expressed frustration that his presidency failed to overcome the divide in society, which was deepened after Trump’s previous rise to power.

The publication notes that Biden’s management style has even been criticized by his own allies.

Biden’s assistants say that the current U.S. president tried not to place the blame on Democrat Kamala Harris or her campaign for the failure in the election.

But many Democrats blame Harris’ defeat on Biden’s persistence, as he stayed in the race so long, leaving Harris with just over three months for her campaign. Others argue that Biden undermined his own message by trying to hold onto the presidency instead of paving the way for a younger group of anti-Trump Democrats who could lead the country into the future.

“Biden ran promising that he would be a transitional president and, in essence, would serve one term before passing power to another generation. I think his running again violated that concept – the conceptual basis of the theory that he would end Trump’s appeal, defeat Trumpism, and open a new era,” said Senator Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut).

Biden’s critics accuse him of not understanding that his own track record alone was not enough to win the election, and that he needed to tell a story that would resonate with America. The U.S. president was so convinced that the primary concern for voters was American democracy that he often made it the central message of his campaign.

Let us remind you that nearly half of Ukraine’s citizens believe that Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president would bring peace to our country. At the same time, only 23% of them believe that a peace agreement with Russia under these conditions would be fair.
