Illegally detained Crimean Tatar activist Edem Bekirov, accused of illegal possession of ammunition and explosives by Russia-controlled Crimean authorities, may be taken to Armiansk, a lawyer for Bekirov, Alexey Ladin, said this at a meeting of Crimean Solidarity on June 29, 2019, a correspondent of Crimea.Realities reported.
According to the lawyer, there are no conditions for Bekirov’s care.
“I assume that they want to send the case to Armiansk in order to make the work of defense more complicated. But the main problem is that there is only one detention facility in Crimea, respectively, Bekirov will be kept in the temporary detention center of Armiansk, which absolutely has no special conditions for keeping such an ill person. Bekirov told the investigator: ‘If the case is sent to Armiansk, you will take me there only by force.’ Because it is equal to death,” Ladin said.
The lawyer hopes that on July 3, 2019, the Supreme Court of Crimea would satisfy the appeal of the defense and that he would remain in the detention center where he is currently being held.
“There are certain hopes that this case may become an exception for the Crimean legal proceedings and they will put Bekirov under home arrest,” he said.
The lawyer said that he is in the process of getting acquainted with the materials of the criminal case, in the near future he will be sent to the court for consideration.
“We did not see anything new in the materials of the case. Edem Bekirov is accused of attempted transfer of almost 14kg of ammunition and explosives to a secret witness. I recall from the very beginning I said that a disabled person of the first category, having a stumped leg, who recently had a stroke and heart surgery at that time, could not lift more than one kilogram without consequences. The accusation is an absolute absurdity,” the lawyer said.
As reported, Bekirov began fasting in order not to provoke a jump of his blood sugar level.
The European Court of Human Rights ordered on June 11, 2019 that Bekirov be immediately hospitalized.
