Attempts to blackmail Ukraine with a “peace agreement” to force it to surrender are unacceptable, as they will only serve the interests of the aggressor country.
This was stated today in Strasbourg at the plenary session of the European Parliament, during the consideration of the report on the implementation of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy in 2024, by the chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“The first priority (of the EU’s foreign policy – ed.) is to respond to the consequences of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. Let me be very clear: any attempts to blackmail Ukraine and force it to surrender for the sake of a ‘peace deal’ only strengthen the aggressor. Putin should not get through negotiations what he could not achieve on the battlefield,” the head of the parliamentary committee emphasized.
“Over the coming weeks and months, we will continue to stand united as steadfast partners of Ukraine. We will ensure that Ukraine has the means to liberate its people and deter further Russian aggression,” added McAllister.
As reported earlier, Putin suggested that the US, EU and Russia’s “partners” negotiate the introduction of “external governance” in Ukraine and elect a “legitimate government.” At the same time, the Kremlin calls the international recognition of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine – the Crimean peninsula, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, including those parts of them that were not captured by Russian troops – as the territory of Russia as a condition for any negotiations on ending Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
