The Commander of the Hamburg Regional Command, Navy Captain Michael Hiss, said that all of Germany should be prepared for a potential military conflict in 5 years, European Pravda reports, citing Die Welt.

Hiss observed that in the 30 years following the Cold War and the division of Germany, residents focused on enjoying the “peace dividend,” and even today, many Germans do not fully perceive an external threat.

“But my internal clock as a soldier is ticking, and it tells me that in five years, we must be socially stable enough to confront an external military threat,” the commander stated.

When asked if Germany’s largest seaport, Hamburg, should also prepare for war, Hiss responded that “all of Germany should be ready for war.”

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Bundeswehr began drafting the “Operational Plan Germany” in March of the following year. The first version of this classified document, about 1,000 pages long, was completed in March 2024.

The plan is based on the assumption that Russia will have the military capability to attack NATO member states within the next five years.

Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the importance of being prepared for war by 2029.
