Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni didn’t turn a blind eye on China fueling war in Ukraine despite a ‘respectful’ conversation with Xi in Beijing.
This was reported by Reuters and Voice of America.
“I believe China can become, starting from the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that it always appeals to, a key player in helping identify the elements of a just peace,” Meloni said, according to Bloomberg.
However, she stressed that now China is only contributing to Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine instead of helping establish a just peace. And that is a matter of ‘great friction’ for Europe, she added.
Though China has voiced support for territorial integrity of Ukraine, not once has it condemned Russian aggression directly. That issue is accompanied by the fact that China has been providing dual-use products to Russia and boosting its military capabilities.
On July 29, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni met with China’s Xi Jinping within her 5-day visit to China. This was the first trip to China for Meloni which she defined as a way to ‘relaunch’ relations with China after Italy backed off on the Belt and Road Initiative.
