Ukraine enters EU accession talks

The European Union has officially launched negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession on June 25.

This was announced by Ursula von der Leyen on X.

“Congratulations to Moldova and Ukraine on opening accession negotiations. This is very good news for the people of Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire European Union. The path ahead will be challenging but full of opportunities. Wishing you a successful start of the negotiations!” European Commission President stated.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed the decision, and stressed that Ukraine will never give up on its aspiration to become a part of ‘united Europe’.

“Today is a historic day as we proceed to actual, real negotiations with the European Union on Ukraine’s membership. On February 28, 2022, just a few days after the full-scale invasion began, we signed the application for membership,” Zelenskyy said.

On June 21, the Council of the EU approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine and Moldova, which led to the launch of negotiations in Luxembourg on June 25.

On February 28, 2022 Ukraine signed the application for membership and was granted candidate status in June, 2022.
