Council instead of Commission: NATO is considering a new format for Ukraine

On June 15, another meeting was held in Brussels (Belgium) in the Rammstein format. The meeting at the level of defense ministers will be the last before the important for Ukraine NATO summit in Vilnius (Lithuania). Perhaps this will be the last meeting in the Ukraine-NATO Commission format, because after the Vilnius summit, most likely, the Ukraine-NATO Council will already be formed. Vitaliy Sizov, a special correspondent of the Ukrainian foreign broadcasting channel FREEDOM in Europe, spoke about this in a broadcast from Brussels.

At the moment, NATO has 31 members, with a high degree of probability will accept Sweden. But there will be one more associated member, Ukraine. It will effectively be given the right of Article 4 of the alliance, which states that the parties “will hold joint consultations when, in the opinion of either of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened.” Ukraine will have the right to convene meetings of NATO representatives.

“A similar council existed between NATO and Russia. But he hasn’t been working for a long time. The problems began after the invasion of Georgia, and then after the capture of Crimea and aggression in the Donbass. For Russia, they created the format of the Council of NATO and the Russian Federation, and now this format does not work. A similar format is being used in relations with Ukraine,” Sizov said.

Today we talked about the supply of missiles, about air defense (air defense), about training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighters. So far, the dates of specific deliveries, when the F-16 fighters will be on the territory of Ukraine, have not been announced, but now a coalition is being actively formed and work is ongoing.

They talk a lot about logistics, because all the equipment that has already been delivered to Ukraine must work normally, refuel, be serviced, repaired, and this is emphasized.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in his speech drew attention to the fact that there is a lot of talk about aircraft, but in fact there are other important issues that need to be discussed. He stressed that Ukraine is achieving results on the battlefield, which means that it is able to retake its occupied territories. And only such an approach makes it possible to force Russia into negotiations.

“The more Ukraine achieves, the more likely it is that Russian President Vladimir Putin will realize that he cannot win and must negotiate for a just peace,” NATO Secretary General said.

Now he sees no desire on the part of Russia to enter into real negotiations to achieve peace. The actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) create the basis for the real liberation of the country and for the real achievement of peace and security.
